Respond to Mary McCarthy's comment that "It is a troubling thought that Macbeth, of all Shakespeare's characters, should seem the most 'modern,' the only one you could transpose into contemporary battle dress or a sport shirt and slacks".

  1. Mary McCarthy's comment is talking about how despite Macbeth's disgusting and disturbing characteristics, he fits in quite well with today's society. Out of all the Shakespearian characters, Macbeth fits the well, and that is quite a disturbing thought because Macbeth is one of the most evil characters that Shakespeare has created/the evilest character Shakespeare has created.

    1. Edit: Macbeth fits the well, supposed to be Macbeth fits the best. Modern Day Parallel of Macbeth: "Macbeth was a very greedy and unhappy man who was very susceptible to pressure. Everyone in today’s modern world fits the Macbeth mold in one sense or another. There is not a living being that has never fallen prey to peer pressure, greed or jealousy", from "https://simply-macbeth.weebly.com/modern-day-parallels.html". Textual example to show Macbeth's evilness (his jealousy): "you must kill both Banquo and his son, Fleance, who keeps him company", from Act 1, Scene 1, Page 6. I used this quote because it comes from a quote earlier in the play, "Your descendants will be kings, even though you will not be one" (referring to Banquo), from Act 1, Scene 3, Page 3. He is jealous because of the prophecy that Banquo's son will become king, so he kills Banquo and his son.

    2. It's just so cruel the way a "bad" or "most evil" character Shakespeare ever created fits so well in our society. Well in this case, Macbeth. This shows that people don't care about each other any more and just want to get what they want

  2. Macbeth is one of the cruelest characters that Shakespeare has written about. He is greedy and thinks about his needs and destiny. He does whatever it takes to get what he wants. In this case, killing King Duncan when he was sleeping. These characteristics of him (greedy, selfish, jealous, etc.) fits well in today’s society. If he could wear “sport shirt and slacks”, he would perfectly fit in today’s society.
Modern day parallel: The lion king. In this movie Scar kills his brother to get the kingdom. Scar was jealous of Mufasa because he was the king at the time and was tired of following his orders. Peralta, S. (2015, June 18). Macbeth:Jealousy. Retrieved November 19, 2019, from https://prezi.com/2mc4y2fslsh-/macbethjealousy/

Macbeth is also jealous of Banquo because he doesn't have a son and Banquo does. Same thing for Scar.

    Quotes for ambition:
    Two truths are told
As happy prologues to the swelling act
    Of th’imperial theme (1.3)

    Thou wouldst be great
Art not without ambition, but without
The illness should attend it (1.5)

    I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
    Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself
    And falls on th’other (1.7)

To be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus (3.1)

    Quotes for jealousy:
You must kill both Banquo and his son, Fleance, who keeps him company. (1.1)

  3. Mary McCarthy’s comment is basically talking about how Macbeth fits in today life because of his evil deeds which he was pressured to do with the influence of his wife and the foresight of the three witches and the reason as to why she says so is because Macbeth is one of the most evil characters in the story.Macbeth is a jealous, selfish and acquisitive man who gets whatever he wants in whatever way it takes like killing King Duncan in his sleep just to become king because he was jealous and in today life people get whatever they want by being evil towards others and Macbeth fits.
Modern day parallel: Scarface:This film talks about Tony who arrives in Miami with nothing and he gets jealous seeing other people with money and power so he rises to become a powerful drug lord.Textual example to show Macbeth’s evilness
"you must kill both Banquo and his son, Fleance, who keeps him company", from Act 1, Scene 1, Page 6, this quote relates to the quote the third witch said in Act 1, Scene 3, Page 3, "Your descendants will be kings, even though you will not be one". It was prophesied that Banquo’s son will become King so he decided to kill him them.

  4. McCarthy’s comment means Macbeth’s cruelty can find in people’s behavior nowadays. It shows how evil Macbeth is and nowadays people are.
Macbeth was a soldier and he decided to kill his king which he was loyal to, just because of his benefits.
He killed him to get a promotion and his seat.
Nowadays people will hurt each other’s feelings or they even hurt each other physically to earn a promotion.
People, like Macbeth, are selfish. They do anything to survive and to get anything they want.
