2-What is the “sign” that comes “down from the world of grownups?” (p. 95). Analyze its literal as well as figurative meanings.
3-When the hunters let the fire go out, Ralph asks, “Hasn’t anyone got any sense? We’ve got to relight that fire…. Or don’t any of
you want to be rescued?” (p. 102). Do the boys want to be rescued? What reasons might there be to reject civilized society?
4- What might be Golding’s purpose in including the mock hunting scene where Robert is surrounded by the other boys?
For Question 2, the quote is on page 103. For Question 3, the quote is on page 111, and For Question 4, the scene is from page 125-126. (The pages are for if you use the novel, not the PDF)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help.

ReplyDeleteThe sign is the pilot falling from the sky because his plane got shot in an air battle. It means that the grownups themselves are not in a civilized situation (WWII).
Q3)
I think they quite enjoy their current situation. Playing games all day, no rules, no grownups, no orders to follow, no school this is like a dream for them because they are all students and kids. Ralph wants to rescued but Jack doesn’t because he is a leader now and he is used to this situation.
Q4)
It shows that they don’t care about each other and just want to have fun.

DeleteDo you think by not caring for each and just having fun will help them find their way out?

ReplyDeleteAnswer: If answering this question literally, you simply just define the words and put together a meaning. By reading the text and the words around this phrase, you can understand the literal meaning. On a literal view, the "sign" is the battle being fought above the island. Where war is being fought. The "sign" that came down is the slowly dying parachutist, coming from the war above. When the parachutist came down, the survivors later interpreted it as "the beast". From a figurative standpoint, you could imagine what exactly the "down from the world of grownups" part means. The "down from the world of grownups" bit of the quote could be the result of the actions of the grownups. What I mean is that at that period, a multitude of wars has been fought, with WWII and The Cold War. From the world of grownups could be wars and violence, in which violence is foreshadowed later in the book. The battling above the island is from the world of grownups. In which the sign would be the parachutist falling. Simply, the figurative meaning is that the "sign" is the parachutist from the war being fought above, which is from "the world of grownups" and it came down from this world. A "sign" of the "world of grownups" coming down onto the island. To summarize, the literal meaning can be the parachutist as the sign of the battle fought above, while the figurative meaning is the "sign" but instead of as a result of the war, it is the result of the actions from the "world of grownups" and the parachutist coming down as a sign of that action.

Answer: It seems like some boys want to be rescued and some have either lose hope of being saved or do not care. For example, Jack going off to be a new leader just so he can hunt and hunt all day. He does not care about being rescued or being saved, just as long as he can hunt pig and food. However, Ralph and a few others like Piggy still cling onto the hope that they could be saved. Despite the beast being on the mountain, they still attempt to build a fire in hopes that someone can see the signal and rescue them off the island. Reasons to reject civilized society can be a lack of freedom. On the island, kids are free to play all day. No school to go to, no work to do, and more. The island is essentially an anarchy society: where kids and boys do as they please without the worry of any authority. A big reason to reject civilized society is the lack off freedom and that if anyone does something wrong, there will be no one held responsible. This is because there are no adults or anyone with enough authority to discipline/punish the boys if something wrong happens. To summarize, some boys want to be rescued because they do not want to hunt all day and die on the island as a savage. However, some still cling onto hope, namely Ralph and Piggy, that they will be saved and can return to a more civilized society.

ReplyDeleteAnswer: I feel like Golding is trying to show what happens as the boys are stranded on the island for extended periods. A place where the best food is found through the method of hunting. Where people are free to do as they please and no punishment will be issued for unethical behavior. Golding has several purposes for including this scene. Here are a few that I have found. One purpose can be to show the devolution of society when broken away from ethics. In society, when someone pretends to be a pig, no one would ever poke a weapon and carry them while chanting a death phrase. The devolution of society where the boys slowly turn into savages and killers. The desire and influence to inflict harm on one another. Another purpose can be accepted. Maybe the hunting scene can show the boys accepting the fact that they will be stuck on the island. That they will be there forever and are trying to make the best out of a somewhat horrible situation. In summary, Golding is trying to portray the effects of being away from civilized society for long periods, and the devolution that comes with it.

ReplyDeletethe “sign” that comes down from the world of grownups is dead body coming from the sky, from a battle of airplanes. It is also a sign that they might end up like this too, if they don't stop fighting . It means that the grownups are not civilized.
True. And since there is no grownups on the island they might end up like them.
DeleteQ.3
ReplyDeleteI think they are so used to being schoolboys and have to follow rules , that they like having no rules but freedom ,they like this better than being constricted by school, and rules.
That is quite true, lets be honest, if we had no rules, the world would be way different, but in a pretty bad way.

ReplyDeleteI think that he put that scene in there to show the loss of innocence. It clearly shows that none of them are worried or care about Robert, and that they don’t really care about each other. It shows that the feelings of others are not in the interests of anyone.
2) They wish "grownups" were around because grownups "know things." and they can solve their problems in the right way. At the beginning of Chapter 6, an air battle takes place over the island while the boys are sleeping. During the battle, a paratrooper gets shot out of the sky and floats to earth.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, the "sign" from the grownups is the dead paratrooper, and figuratively the paratrooper symbolizes the existence of God, that he gives his creatures what they want but not exactly what they want.
3) At first, they were some civilized children and they wanted to get rescued but as time passed they lost their hopes and they thought hunting and to look for meat is more important than getting rescued and all of that shows how the situation impacts their personalities.
4) The boys decided to re-enact the scene with Robert volunteering to play the boar. Things rapidly get out of control. It clearly shows that none of them are worried or care about Robert and that they don’t really care about each other. It shows that the feelings of others are not in the interests of anyone. The boys are losing their humanity and their sense of being in contact with the civilized world and moving towards a more savage ethos.
